Yewtree trunk with its rotten insides taken out but the remaining body is bone hard. 150cm x 64cm. (59" x 25")   Zigi at work : sawing, axing, drilling and carving.
 
Half made SOUL OF TREE

Yew tree is one of Zigi's favourite carving wood because its wonderful colour. Its grain intertwines, therefore there is very little splitting or cracking - a great advantage to the sculptor.

Zigi using diamond saw while carving MOTHER LATVIA (1991)   My wife Paula was posing on several occasions during the carving process.   The very skeleton or armature for WOMAN IN GARDEN. Metal structure pitched to resist rusting.
Process : gradual application of black cement concrete, grinding, seasoning, keeping it damp.
