In Scotland, forty three years ago, I bought a derelict, condemned building in Newbattle near Edinburgh. It was made up of two adjoining cottages that were three hundred years old, it stood on an acre of land measured off from a sheep field, after the building had been built in the autumn of 1960.
This was to become my studio, workshop, and living quarters which I dedicated in living memory of my native homeland. I firstly had to remove the old roofs and gut the inside of the building. Various tradesmen and helpers came and went but a lot of the work I did myself and so made a home for our family. |
